Spotlight On: Pope’s Yard Brewery
Are you in the mood to try something new?
Pope’s Yard Brewery is a must-try for any lovers of experimental craft beers. The team strive to create ales using a mix of avant-garde and experimental processes and ingredients, resulting in some unique craft beers that can’t be found anywhere else.
The brewery is based in Apsley, Hertfordshire and is located in an old watermill that dates back over 1000 years. Their brewery produces 800-880 litres per brew and has a 5.5 UK barrel (10hL) brewhouse, perfect for creating their “increasingly wild beers”. With ingredients like yarrow, mugwort and Lapland souchong tea, when you taste a Pope’s Yard brew you’ll be experiencing a one-of-a-kind beer taste. “Our desire has always been to experiment and to play.”
A key beer to try is “Club Hammer”, a chocolatey London stout that has been rated one of their best on Untapped. This craft was also voted CAMRA’s “Hertfordshire Beer of the Year 2016”, proving how popular it is. With black malt, chocolate malt and roasted barley, this unorthodox stout is based on old-style Stout Porters.
Another favourite is “Lacerta U.S.”, an American pale ale. This craft ale brings aromas of pear, nectarine and ripe pineapple to the table, with a hint of mango too. This sweet concoction is balanced with a piney bitterness from a blend of Cascade, Chinook and a post-fermentation dose of El Dorado hops. This is an absolute must-try for any APA lovers.
